Edith Diehl was born in Brewster, New York. She studied bookbinding in Europe for five years and eventually established her own bindery in New York City, employing two of the French bookbinders who had formerly worked for the Grolier Club bindery. She was later in charge of the bindery at the Printing House of William Edwin Rudge and then, for two years, produced bindings for books designed by Bruce Rogers.
